Shayama Puja (Kali Puja)
Our flagship celebration — a decorated pandal, the beat of the dhaak, bhog and festive stalls.
Oikotan – The Culture of Bengal
Oikotan is a Bengali cultural community based in Miyapur, Hyderabad — families, friends and neighbours who come together to keep the festivals, food, music and language of Bengal alive, far from home. What binds us is simple: the joy of celebrating together.
Oikotan — meaning harmony, many voices in one tune — began with a handful of Bengali families in Miyapur who wanted their children to grow up hearing dhaak, reciting Tagore and sitting down to bhog with neighbours.
What started as a small puja in a community hall has grown into a year-round cultural family — from Shayama Puja and Saraswati Puja to Bengali Nababarsha, an annual picnic, donation drives and cultural programmes that fill the calendar and the community hall alike.

We are a volunteer-run, community-first cultural organisation. Every event is planned, funded and staged by members of the community themselves — there are no paid organisers behind the scenes, only neighbours who care.
Our home base is the BK Enclave Community Hall in Miyapur, Hyderabad – 500049, with larger festivals spilling into the surrounding grounds. Our doors are open to everyone — Bengali or not — who wishes to share the celebration.
To celebrate the festivals, arts and traditions of Bengal with the warmth and authenticity they deserve, and to give every family in our community — especially our children — a place where that culture is lived, not just remembered.
A thriving Bengali community in Hyderabad where traditions pass naturally to the next generation, and where neighbours of every background find friendship, support and a seat at the table.
Our year is anchored by five main events, supported by cultural programmes through the seasons:

Our flagship celebration — a decorated pandal, the beat of the dhaak, bhog and festive stalls.

A day of devotion and learning, celebrated with our children at its heart.

Welcoming the Bengali new year with food, music and adda.

An annual day outdoors for the whole community, sometime near Christmas.

Giving back — collecting and distributing support to those who need it in and around our community.

Talent competitions, performances and adda sessions that keep the stage busy all year round.

Everything is organised and run by volunteers; decisions rest with the members, not an outside hand.

We celebrate festivals with the rituals, food and music they deserve — never a shortcut version.

A stage for singers, dancers, reciters and actors of every age — especially the youngest among us.

We encourage Bangla at home, on stage and in everything we programme.

Helping newcomers to Hyderabad find friends and belonging, and welcoming every neighbour who wishes to join the celebration.

From bhog to adda, the table is the heart of it — we celebrate by sharing food, stories and time together.
